A luncheon voucher advertisement from March 1958.

Women who smoked opium were frowned upon and treated more harshly than male smokers. It was believed that smoking opium would cause women to abandon and neglect their motherly and marital duties, or else become sterile. But the real picture of opium smoking was of men who were plummeted into moral decay through opium addiction and the women who exploited the drug: the yanhua, the young employees who prepared the pipes for the clients in the opium dens, and the prostitutes who used it for seduction.
